So is chambray! The difference between denim and chambray? The weave! So, since they are made of similar materials, you should have similar results. If you are wanting to add color, I would recommend using white, or a very, very light-washed denim.
This will help the dyes show up more vividly and vibrantly. If your denim or chambray piece is too dark, your colors will look very muted. So, the lighter the wash, the brighter and more true your tie-dye colors will appear.
Alternatively, you can go with a very dark wash, or even black, and use reverse tie-dye, or bleach, to take away the color in a tie-dyed pattern. Be creative, the possibilities are pretty numerous.
You can even try this technique on colored denim as well! Many of my jeans these days are a blend of cotton and spandex. For bleach dyeing, cotton is best as other materials cannot stand up well to the bleaching process.
The stitching on jeans is polyester. Place your jacket on a flat surface and prepare design as desired. I used the spiral technique. So, I pinched in the middle of my jean jacket and twisted inward.
I then secured tightly with rubber bands. The tighter the rubber bands, the more jean or white space that will show in the finished product. You can view how I created my design in the video below. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area and put on your gloves. Bleach can get very potent and irritate your skin and airway if you are not careful! Apply the bleach liberally to your jacket.
Wait about minutes for the bleach to develop. Rinse and then wash twice to remove bleach smell. Here are some featured looks available for purchase. Love your post and love that we love similar things! Great DIY post as always! The process of it looks fun to try. It came out really well! I love the shibori DIY! A simple way to neutralize the bleach at home is pour Hydrogen Peroxide over the entire affected area. Swirl it around, make sure it has covered and penetrated all bleach areas well.
Then wash and dry the shirt regularly. Preferably alone at first so any stray bleach does not ruin anything else. Always wear gloves and cover your mouth and nose with a bandanna or mask, the bleach is toxic to breathe in and absorb through your skin!

Just FYI to people wanting to work with bleach: bleach will not stop working on your fabric just because you washed it out. It continues to slowly affect your fabric unless you use some sort of chemical to neutralize it chemically. Anti-Chlor is probably cheapest if you are using it often but there are alternatives.
Fabulous tutorial!!! I thing is the clearest tutorial to show my few readers. Looks like some kinda acid wash to me…not really tie dye…the blue needs to be lighter and the patterns need to look more like tie dye design versus splotches imo…tweaked and this could be on fleek X-. I would just follow the instructions but be careful as bleach is very strong and can potentially make holes in your denim depending on how thick it is. I would try a diluted solution of bleach and water or just monitor the dye process carefully and not leave it in the bleach for very long.
You may find that not all denim will bleach as easily since some are heavy in polyester nowadays. Test in a spot that does not show. I found that the ones without polyester did bleach best. Skip to content. Throw it in the dyer and your denim tie dye shirt is ready to wear!
